Neville Farmer’s years producing food and travel television stood him in good stead for directing Festival Oaxaca. But the lessons learned over weeks with Maestro Cirino and his family, studying the Eléctrico approach to Artesanal mezcal-making, absorbing the culture, the environment and the human stories of rural San Baltazar Guelavila, in stark contrast with the zest for life that Oaxaca City exudes, that inspired his multi-layered, collage approach to the film.

Festival Oaxaca’s Editor, David Lewis learned his craft as right-hand man to the celebrated British art house filmmaker, Derek Jarman. He is a past master of taboo-breaking film editing and he and Director, Neville Farmer established a unique working relationship. In his deft hands, they wove together a short film utilizing color, music, energy, intimacy and emotion to tell a story unique to Oaxaca and the people behind Eléctrico Mezcal.

Eléctrico Mezcal owes its very existence to the music of Kathleen Blackwell and Project Eléctrico, so her art naturally formed the soundtrack to Festival Oaxaca. It also perfectly manifested the mold-breaking approach of the Eléctrico philosophy, embracing tradition and the joy of multi-cultural collaboration to create something new, fresh and exciting.
